WEEK 3: Sunday, October 23 – "Healthy Relationships Under God"
- Eph. 5:21 – 6:9
On Sunday we focused on two of the three areas that Paul discusses in this portion of his letter to the church. One of these was the relationship between a husband & wife, and the second that relationship between parents & children.
As we looked at the marriage relationship we noted that several times Paul compares the marriage relationship of a husband and wife to that of Christ and the Church (His Body). We also quoted John Piper stating that "marriage is like a metaphor, a parable....(standing) for the relationship between Christ and the church."
Husbands and wives, how have you seen your marriage parallel this relationship between Christ and the church? How do you work out the meaning of verse 23 – the concepts of headship, yet understanding fully the original meaning of the Greek word (hypostasso) or submit (be subject to one another)?
Husbands, what does it look like for you to love your wife as Christ loved the church?
Fathers (parents), how have you exasperated your children? What actions, expectations, statements or experiences have had this effect on them? Did you recognize this result? How is God working in you to change your role in this?
Also – no matter our age, we are all children and have continued interactions with our parents (assuming they are still living). As an adult child, what does it look like to obey your parents, to honor your father and mother?
If relationships have been rocky with your parents, is God calling you to renew that relationship and what will that require?
